10 times table

Children usually learn the 10 times table in Year 2 in the UK and in Grade 2 in the US. It is the easiest table, and the one all the others lean on: 9 × 7 is 70 minus 7, 5 × 8 is half of 80. Below are the facts from 10 × 1 to 10 × 12, the tricks that make them stick, the mistakes to watch for, and two things to print: a worksheet with 32 problems (multiplication both ways round and the matching division facts, with eight animals to rescue) and a poster of the table in its colour from the multiplication chart. Free, no sign-up.

The 10s come first, with the 2s and the 5s. The 9 times table and the 11s are each one lot away from the 10s. All twelve tables at once are on the multiplication chart, and the Multiplication Tables Check practice sheets test the 2 to 12 tables in the format of the Year 4 check.

How the worksheet works

  1. Each of the eight animals has three problems to work out and one gate problem, just like in the game: out of three answers, your child circles the right one.
  2. When all four problems are right, the animal is rescued: in the ink-saving version your child colours in its star, in the colouring version the whole animal.
  3. The problems run from 10 × 2 to 10 × 10, both ways round, and the matching division facts (60 ÷ 10 and 60 ÷ 6).
  4. There is no answer key on purpose: check the answers together, or let your child check with the swapped fact (10 × 3 = 30, so 3 × 10 = 30).

Tricks for the 10 times table

  1. Put a zero on the end

    10 × 7 = 7010 × 12 = 120

Ten times a whole number is the number with a 0 after it. (Later in school: the digits move one place to the left.)

  2. Count in tens

    10, 20, 30, 40, 50

Ten fingers, ten toes, ten pence: counting in tens is the whole table.

  3. The way into other tables

    9 × 7 = 70 − 75 × 7 = 70 ÷ 211 × 7 = 70 + 7

    Knowing 10 × 7 = 70 gives 9 × 7, 5 × 7 and 11 × 7 almost for free.

  4. Take the zero off to divide

    80 ÷ 10 = 8120 ÷ 10 = 12

Dividing by ten takes the zero away again.

  5. Division is multiplication backwards

    70 ÷ 10 = 7, because 7 × 10 = 70

70 ÷ 10 asks: how many 10s fit into 70? The worksheet practises both directions.

Common mistakes

For teachers

The sheet works well as independent practice, homework or an extension task for early finishers; the poster goes on the wall next to the full multiplication chart so the class can see where the 10s sit. The colouring version prints on any black-and-white photocopier, and the ink-saving version needs very little colour. In England the 2 to 12 tables are checked in Year 4; the practice sheets for that check are linked above.

FAQ

When do children learn the 10 times table?

In Year 2 in England (the national curriculum) and in Grade 2 in the US, as one of the first three tables, with the 2s, 5s and 10s. In England all tables to 12 are checked at the end of Year 4.

What is 10 × 10?

100. It is the square number of this table, shown in a white box on the chart and on the worksheet poster.

Is the worksheet really free?

Yes. It is free, with no sign-up and no email address. You may print and copy it for home and for the classroom (CC BY-NC 4.0).

Is there an answer key?

No, on purpose. The swapped fact is a good check: if your child worked out 10 × 4 = 40, they can check it with 4 × 10. For the gate problems, the right answer is one of the choices anyway.

What is the difference between the two worksheet versions?

The ink-saving version has animals in colour and a star to colour in. The colouring version is completely black and white, and the rescued animal itself gets coloured in.

How can my child keep practising the 10 times table?

Short, frequent practice helps most: a few minutes a day beats one long session. The free game Number Jungle asks the facts that are still wobbly more often until they stick, and the poster on the wall is there for a quick look-up in between.
